First run in the Superblast 3, having clocked up over 1200KM in the Superblast 2 this was always going to be an interesting first outing. There is definitely more room in the toe box, which is good news, the 3’s are softer than the 2’s but not as soft as the Megablast. I’ve always enjoyed the blend of energy return and firmness from the 2’s.

Dialled in, hooked up and controlled. That was one of the most enjoyable sessions I’ve run in a while, 0.62mi (1KM) repeats. The evening was perfect, lighter nights make such a difference to training, as we come out of the darker winter months and into the light.

Was cool to see two young lads on the trail, I guess age 13/14, enjoying a bit of jogging and walking, as I was doing repeats we passed a few times, on one repeat they crouched either side of the trail looking back at me approaching, 3…2…1 sprint! For 100yds we raced! Loved this simple, fun interaction, lovely lads and a pleasure to share the trail with them.

Week 2 has been strong, I’m pleased with how each of the sessions has progressed, especially through the controlled 15mi progression run Saturday. This will likely be the last long run in the Superblast 2’s as the 3’s were released overnight and I’ve orderer a pair (at 1:30am!)

Your run, your way. Long run Saturday, 15mi negative splits out on the rail trail. I dialled into this run perfectly, good music, great shoe choice, cool breeze and a sun poking through the clouds. I did however do it my way. On the final 3.5mi split at 7.55/mi I put in a 90s recovery halfway. Why? Because I’m tired after a busy week and can feel my body fighting a cold. I always remember it’s my run, my way. I do what I feel right.

As the rains set in again I headed to the gym for tonight’s session, a tempo interval. It was hot, sweaty and perfectly dialled in. And it was dry too! Do enjoy a treadmill session now and then, they are controlled and there is little option but to keep on the pace. After my 24 hour treadmill run you’d think I wouldn’t go near a treadmill again.

As this is early in the training plan I kept the repeats controlled, around 8.00-8.25:mi with a final one at 7.43/mi, last night was a strength session with PT @steve_middleton_lowes and today the legs felt surprisingly good. 🏋️

👉 controlling the easy pace, I always run these too fast

👉 improve core strength which I felt the benefit of today in the downhill sections

👉 Learning more about how my body is consuming carbs

Conversational pace can feel really slow, really slow at times, but that is the whole point, it should be easy and relaxed. Today the plan called for 13.1mi at conversational pace, I took in a hilly route but kept it all very dialled back, and what an enjoyable run that was.

I live very rural, it’s all single track country lanes, high hedges and plenty of mud and standing water. One lane was knee deep flooded resulting in a quick about turn and rethink of route.

I close out the first week of the new plan feeling strong. A leg massage yesterday was welcome, looking after my body with warm up stretching, cool down stretching and regular massages is important as I ask a lot of the body.

Headed out for a progressive tempo run on an incredible day. If you’ve seen my earlier post it feels quite an emotional day, the last few years from cancer recovery have introduced me to some amazing people, and to be asked by Runna to be an Ambassador for a company that has been integral to my return to running.

Easy run Saturday, long run Sunday.

Headed out for a progressive tempo run on an incredible day. If you’ve seen my earlier post it feels quite an emotional day, the last few years from cancer recovery have introduced me to some amazing people, and to be asked by Runna to be an Ambassador for a company that has been integral to my return to running.

Easy run today, headed to the gym to get out of the wet and cold, could I have got the wet weather gear on, absolutely, but that would mean head down, running in the dark and alone. Heading to the gym was the right call, as I caught up with some great people like @ashleylewis3781 and @megslifemed who I had a lovely chat with.

On the way to the gym I took a fantastic phone call from someone who is so supportive of my running and the awareness messaging, she is an amazing person and we’ll be working on something special again soon. I also had an awesome videoconference call tonight with a wonderful person across the pond, and there is exciting news to bring from there soon.

These hang by my home office desk, I have dozens of them just inches from my right shoulder. For me they serve as a reminder of how hard it so often was to reach the point where someone smiled at me, placed it around my neck, and said ‘well done’

It wasn’t about the 26.2mi or 50K or 100K that led me to that moment. It was about the sacrifices, the days when I didn’t want to lace up but did, the hot sunny days when I could run forever, the illness and injury that needed managing, the balancing work and family life against training.

It was about all that led me to the start line.

I keep the medals close, for when I am finding life a little heavy or out of balance. Reaching across to hold them gives me a perspective only they could.

Training plan completed with an easy run, wrapping a 3 week post race recovery programme, allowing the body time to recover and balancing some speed work too.

Every training plan, every block that is completed is another step forwards in my post cancer journey. May 9 - Run for the Glaze a solo effort self designed London Ultra in collaboration with @krispykremeuk as together we support cancer charity @chemohero and I’ll be running round London visiting over 20 Krispy Kreme stores enjoying doughnuts as I go 🍩

August 1 - @ultrachallenges North Downs 50, my ball shorts will be out getting guys thinking about testicular cancer and I’ll be carrying on my running pack the names of those affected by cancer.

August 22 - head to Chamonix for UTMB week, I’ll be running some trails in the mountains and attending some of the shakeout runs in town, including the @run4adventure.uk one, so if you’re in town come join Loyd & Liga for what has to be the weeks best run

And I’ll drop in another event late in the year, thats TBA. And a few days back on the South West Coast Path in April.

I am desperately needing to switch out the Superblasts for a new pair but there is talk of the Superblast 3 launching imminently, I’m holding out. The 2’s have been an incredible shoe to run in, they took some breaking in but once they did they came alive.

Sunday morning at @platform_gym_and_fitness18 for a plyometric session. Introduced these sessions a few months ago, to find some gains when running hills. I was not necessary looking for speed increases more about efficiency and power, feeling controlled through the hill.

Good to see my PT @steve_middleton_lowes there this morning training for his powerlifting comps this year.

➡️ Bulgarian box and jump
➡️ high knees
➡️ flexor ankle ball hold

Strength session tomorrow with PT, and Tuesday kicks off the week of runs.

4mi easy run today, great run in the dark, thanks to my Fenix head torch I could see where I was going!

It was far too dark and cold to take a post run photo outside, so I warmed up by the Aga and took the photo there instead.

Next run is Saturday, relatively easy with some faster strides. Then next week is back to a normal week of running.

My Suoerblasts could do with being retired, with talk of the Superblast 3 coming soon I am reluctant to buy another pair of 2’s. Could Asics just hurry up and ship me a pair!

Not firmed up the date yet of my next ultra, it will be a self designed one, likely in London and will probably include 🍩 most likely in May/June. Then I may do the @ultrachallenges North Downs 50 which is 1st August this year, lots of reasons why I like that one, route, location and get to see lots my family. Always enjoy an Ultra Challenge event, I find them incredibly friendly. Then it’s off to Chamonix 🗻

It’s more than a medal. I cried as I came up the last hill, rounded the corner towards the finish. Never for a moment do I ever forget how fortunate I was to check my 🍒 when I did, and found the cancer. It had progressed and if I’d not checked when I did I likely would not ever had laced up the shoes again.

Those final moments on any race, whether organised or self-designed always take me to a place of deep reflection. I will always, always be grateful to @jeremyclarkson1 @jamesmaybloke and @richardhammond for that episode of The Grand Tour that made me stop, think and check. I don’t say it lightly when I say they saved my life.

I now carry that baton forward, reminding you all to check and to talk to your mates and sons about testicular cancer, a cancer that affects men aged 15+ so yes please talk to your sons. If we talk openly, if I keep carrying that baton forward we will save lives. And for as long as I am able to run that’s exactly what I’ll do.

Loyd and Liga’s support for the running community is amazing, I heard so many people talking about Run4Adventure whilst I was running and at aid stations this weekend at Arc of Attrition.

They are amazing people with the biggest hearts, it is always a pleasure to see them.

Medal Monday. UTMB Arc of Attrition Arc 25.
After a week of awful weather, and the most horrendous conditions for the Arc 100 runners Sunday came as a bit of a surprise. Blue skies and sun. Thank you Cornwall.

Winter ultras are not usually for me, but I knew lots of people running this year and thought hey why not. Lovely to meet @chasingironat50 and Laura at the start as well as at the end. Turning Insta friends to IRL.

Always so good to see @iwill_beth an incredible runner, I’ve watched Beth grow stronger and stronger, it’s an honour to be a tiny part of her journey.

And seeing Loyd & Liga from @run4adventure.uk is always so good. Two of the nicest people you will ever meet. Can’t wait to be in Chamonix later this year and hope we get some miles in together. Thanks for the warmest of greetings Loyd & Liga.

The course was as expected, it’s the coast path, rocky, very muddy, technical in places. I was so grateful with my shoe choice, the grip levels are insane, they never faulted once and I saw an awful lot of people fall in the mud.

Arc Angels and crew were amazing. To the Angel that just gave me the best hug ever at the end and such kind words, you have a heart so big. ❤️

First pic is the traditional medal Monday, pic 2 is how I actually felt having driven down Saturday, run Sunday and drove back Sunday night.
