UTMB 2027 Lottery: How, Where and When to Enter

The UTMB 2027 lottery is expected to open for pre-registration in December 2026 or early January 2027. To enter UTMB, CCC or OCC you'll need at least one active Running Stone and a valid UTMB Index. UTMB haven't confirmed the UTMB 2027 registration dates yet.
UTMB is going to change. Chamonix's new mayor, François-Xavier Laffin, has made that clear. He wants fewer runners crossing the nature reserves, fewer night races and a smaller race week over the next five years.
And he didn't hold back. "A large majority of Chamonix residents despise this event," he told L'Équipe in July. Strong words. Although he's also said he doesn't want to kill the race, just to rekindle the town's love for running.
Personally, having been there for UTMB week, I'd say there are plenty of café owners, hoteliers and Airbnb hosts who are already very much in love with it. Funny that.

Being in Chamonix for UTMB week this year, you could feel it. You could hear the conversations taking place in every café and on every shakeout run. I've written about that in the blog article Is UTMB Too Big? A Week in Chamonix Has Left Me Wondering.
But that won't stop thousands of runners chasing stones and throwing their name into the ballot for a coveted place at CCC, OCC or the UTMB itself. And rightly so.
The finish line in the heart of old Chamonix is a finish like no other. The support and the noise from the spectators is simply electric. It will carry even the most tired of legs under the blue arch.
With 2027 entries opening soon, let's take a quick look at when, where and how to enter, with a very brief rundown on Running Stones and your UTMB Index.
When does the UTMB 2027 lottery open? - the key dates
UTMB haven't announced the 2027 lottery dates yet. The mayor, the prefecture and the organisers were due to settle the 2027 format in talks this September and October, before registration opens. Until then, the 2026 lottery is the best guide.
Stage | 2026 lottery (confirmed) | 2027 lottery (expected) |
Pre-registration opens | 8 January 2026 | December 2026 or early January 2027 |
Pre-registration closes | 19 January 2026, 23:59 CET | Mid to late January 2027 |
Lottery results | 22 January 2026, 11:00 CET | Late January 2027 |
Confirm and pay | By 4 February 2026 | Early February 2027 |
UTMB race week | 24-30 August 2026 | End of August 2027 |
UTMB's own help pages say pre-registration normally runs in December, with the draw in January. So keep an eye on your inbox from late November. I'll update this post the moment the dates land.
And budget for it. The UTMB itself cost somewhere around €350 to €390 to enter in 2026, before you've even thought about kit, a bed or getting to Chamonix.

How to enter UTMB 2027 - Running Stones and the UTMB Index
To enter the UTMB 2027 lottery for UTMB, CCC or OCC you need two things: at least one active Running Stone and a valid UTMB Index in the right category. Then you pre-register through your MyUTMB account on montblanc.utmb.world.
Running Stones. You earn them by finishing a UTMB World Series event, from one stone for a 20K up to four for a 100-miler. Majors pay double. Each stone is one ticket in the hat, so six stones means your name goes in six times. Get picked and your balance goes back to zero. Miss out and they roll over to next year.
The catch? Earn at least one stone every two years or they all go inactive. And only stones earned by 31 December count for the next lottery. You have been warned.
UTMB Index. This is your performance score, worked out from your race results. It needs to be valid in the right category on the day you pre-register:
UTMB (174km): a 100K or 100M index
CCC (101km): a 50K, 100K or 100M index
OCC (57km): a 20K, 50K, 100K or 100M index
Where to enter. Everything happens in MyUTMB. Check your stones and your index there now, not at 11pm on the night pre-registration closes.
Other ways in. Can't face the ballot? A charity bib skips the lottery in return for a donation to the UTMB Foundation, though you still need the stones and the index. In 2026, TDS was first come, first served for runners with the right index. Runners who signed up to UTMB's responsible mobility commitment also got a 30% boost in the lottery. Whether that returns for 2027 is anyone's guess.
UTMB 2027 in Chamonix - will Ben Dhiman and Courtney Dauwalter return?
I'll be in Chamonix again for UTMB week in 2027. Supporting runners, reporting, turning up to shakeout runs, running in the mountains and soaking up an atmosphere like no other. Probably a trip up the Chamonix VK too, if my legs and the ladders allow.
So, are you throwing your name in the hat for 2027? UTMB, CCC or OCC? Let me know in the comments, or over on Instagram at @runningwestwardho.
And then there's the big one. Ben Dhiman won UTMB 2026 in 18:16:29, the first person ever to run it in under 19 hours. Will he be back to defend it? And after Courtney Dauwalter dropped out before halfway this year, will we see her back in Chamonix in 2027 for some unfinished business?
Happy running
Andy
UTMB 2027 lottery FAQs
When does UTMB 2027 registration open?
UTMB have not confirmed the UTMB 2027 registration dates yet. Pre-registration usually runs in December or January. In 2026 it ran from 8 to 19 January, so expect a similar window for 2027.
When are the UTMB 2027 lottery results?
The UTMB 2027 lottery results are expected in late January 2027. The 2026 results came out on 22 January 2026 at 11:00 CET, and selected runners had until 4 February to confirm and pay.
When is UTMB 2027?
UTMB 2027 takes place in Chamonix at the end of August 2027. The exact dates haven't been announced. In 2026, race week ran from 24 to 30 August.
How does the UTMB lottery work?
The UTMB lottery is a draw weighted by Running Stones. You pre-register for UTMB, CCC or OCC through MyUTMB, and each Running Stone you hold puts your name in the draw once. Runners who aren't picked keep their stones for next year.
What are Running Stones and how do you get them?
Running Stones are lottery chances earned by finishing a UTMB World Series event or Major. A World Series event gives one stone for a 20K, two for a 50K, three for a 100K and four for a 100M. Majors give double.
How many Running Stones do I need for UTMB 2027?
You need at least one active Running Stone to enter the UTMB, CCC or OCC lottery. Every extra stone adds another chance in the draw.
Do Running Stones expire?
Running Stones go inactive if you don't earn a new one within two years. Earning one new stone reactivates them all. If you're selected in the lottery, your balance resets to zero.
What UTMB Index do I need for UTMB, CCC and OCC?
You need a valid UTMB Index in the right category when you pre-register. UTMB needs a 100K or 100M index, CCC a 50K, 100K or 100M index, and OCC any index from 20K upwards.
How much does it cost to enter UTMB?
The UTMB entry fee was around €350 to €390 in 2026. Fees for 2027 haven't been published yet.
Can you get into UTMB without the lottery?
Yes, through a charity bib or an elite entry. A charity bib guarantees a place in return for a donation to the UTMB Foundation, but you still need a Running Stone and a valid UTMB Index. Elite runners with a high enough UTMB Index can apply outside the lottery.
Is UTMB getting smaller in 2027?
No changes to the UTMB 2027 races have been announced yet. Chamonix mayor François-Xavier Laffin wants fewer runners in the nature reserves and fewer night races over the next five years.
Who won UTMB 2026?
Ben Dhiman (USA) and Blandine L'Hirondel (France) won UTMB 2026. Dhiman finished in 18:16:29, the first UTMB under 19 hours, and L'Hirondel in 21:54:49, the first woman under 22 hours.
